Enoshima Iwaya Cave

Enoshima Iwaya is a pair of sea caves at the far side of Enoshima in Fujisawa. Waves carved the caves into the island's southern coast. The First Cave extends 152 metres and contains stone Buddhist figures; the Second Cave extends 56 metres and is associated with the island's dragon legend. The caverns are also a place of long-standing religious tradition: stories link them with the monks Kōbō Daishi and Nichiren, and with Minamoto no Yoritomo's prayer in 1182. The caves are a logical final stop after crossing the island past Enoshima Shrine and descending toward the coast. Allow time for the walk across the hill and the return climb. Access can be interrupted in severe weather, so check the current operating notice before making the descent.
